Seeing Colours

Early this morning, we had asked that a table and chairs be set up facing an open window on the thrid floor of the Srikiran Eye Institute. Through the window, the open green fields lined with palm trees and water buffalo grazing about coudl be seen for miles. This would be the perfect spot for Francis and Dominique to document the reaction of our 42-year old shop keeper as his bandages from his cataract surgery were to be removed.

We have been following him since his arrival at the Eye Camp two days before. When he came into the camp, he could not walk - well, technically he could but his blindness had rendered him so utterly afraid of his surroundings that he needed the assitance of two men to guide him into the camp. He turned out to be a perfect cadidate for eye surgery and so, for the following 48 hours, the staff at the Srikiran Eye Institute took care of him and his mother as they prepped him for the operation to remove the cataract from his right eye. The operation was a success and this morning on the third floor of the Institute, we witnessed this man transform in front of our eyes. Once the bandages were removed, so was his anguish, fear and sadness that seemed to have had a solid grip on his entire being the day before. He smiled easily, his voice became less tense but picked up in tone and liveliness, and he was able to walk out of the room by himself. Before he left, Dr. Chandra told the man that  he was to return in two day's time and they would remove the cataract from his left eye - for free.

Here are a few behind-the-scene images for you to see:

Once this filming was wrapped up, my crew scambled downstairs to say farewell to the other patients who had come in from the Eye Camp. As you can see (and they now can too!) that it was a very happy day!

And once the Eye Clinic footage was completed, Dr. Chandra and our personal driver, Lova, took us shopping!
